The company made the decision on ethical grounds following a long campaign by Advocates for Animals.
In a letter to the Duchess of Hamilton, who was AfA’s committee chair at the time, House of Fraser said: “I am sure that you will be delighted to hear that last month the decision was taken on ethical grounds to stop selling foie gras in all its forms in House of Fraser stores.” The Duke and Duchess of Hamilton had boycotted the store over the issue.
House of Fraser’s policy followed decisions by other major stores such as Waitrose, Sainsburys and Lidl to end the sale of foie gras.
In 2021, the UK Government entered talks with stakeholders regarding a ban on foie gras in the UK.
