Members are at the heart of OneKind Scotland – without your support, we couldn’t be the strong voice for Scotland’s animals that we are today. We want to share our members’ stories, and highlight their passion and commitment to animal welfare, so we’ll be putting the spotlight on a different member each fortnight.
Today, meet Emma-Jayne, artist and animal advocate!
Describe yourself in a sentence.
Lost as a wolf cub and raised by humans.
Why did you join OneKind?
I volunteered with OneKind before I became a member, and was amazed at how much good work such a small (but dedicated) team could do. As soon as I was in a position to do so, I wanted to offer regular financial support.
What’s an issue relating to animal welfare that you’re particularly passionate about?
At the moment, I am passionate about becoming vegan. There is no humane way to kill an animal that doesn’t want to die, and that hard truth has caused me to change a lot of my consumption patterns.
If you had to pick one native Scottish animal as a favourite, what would it be?
They’ve been here for two hundred odd years, so it is about time they were recognised as native; the grey squirrel. They are adorable, bright and are survivors in an environment increasingly destroyed by us. They are the victims of bad press and bad science – I’d like OneKind to campaign for their protection.
Tell us about about your current pet, or your favourite past pet?
I share my home with two cats, Lucy and James. Lucy has been with us since she was a kitten, and is a wild child. James came to live with us after his owner (my mum) passed away, and he is a total cuddle monster.
What’s on your current music playlist?
I’m not much of a music person. Instead I listen to podcasts like Last Podcast On The Left, My Favourite Murder, and Stuff Mom Never Told You.
What’s one thing you’d really like to do before the end of 2017?
I’d like to complete a few more art pieces before the end of the year.
